One aspect supposedly under investigation will be why the
husband was promoted to the rank of detective after Garda the investigation
into him was started
More points that will be brushed under the carpet are why:
- Trevor
Bolger had access to firearms that was afforded to Bolger after he did a
spell in a psychiatric institution following the assault.
- The
response Ms Loftus received within An Garda Síochána when she notified
superiors that her husband had been violent, necessitating the application
for a barring order.
- Why,
when Ms Loftus applied for a transfer to her native west of Ireland
following the assault, she was initially granted it but this was then
rescinded. She had relocated herself when she got word that the transfer
was cancelled. She is understood to have told Fiosru (formerly GSOC) that
she was never given an explanation as to why it was cancelled.
- Why
no action was taken against Trevor Bolger until Ms Loftus contacted a
senior management figure in AGS who then set in train an investigation
into Bolger’s conduct.
- Why
Bolger was promoted to the rank of detective after the investigation into
him was started and after he had been interviewed by the investigating
gardaí.
Despite the seriousness of the domestic assault — which
included headbutting and threatening her with a firearm — Bolger retained
access to guns, was promoted to the rank of detective, and avoided a criminal
conviction.
The inquiry will examine troubling elements of the case,
such as the Garda’s internal handling, how the Protective Services Bureau
assessed the situation, and whether Bolger’s actions were adequately reported
and addressed. Notably, a guilty plea was entered at a late stage, allowing
Bolger to avoid conviction under the Probation Act.
Ms Loftus described a pattern of coercive control and said
the justice system failed her. She has called for accountability and reform,
particularly concerning how gardaí accused of violence are managed internally.
Garda headquarters declined to answer specific questions, but Commissioner Drew
Harris has committed to cooperating with the investigation.
Bolger’s conviction is not an isolated incident.

In March 2024 Garda Mark Doyle received a six-year sentence
for sustained domestic violence against his ex-wife and her children.
In February 2025, Garda William Ryan was sentenced to 6
years in prison.  He was convicted last year on
three charges of sexual assault and one of falsely imprisoning a woman at
Aughrim Garda Station in September 2020.
In June 2023 The Chief Supt who was head of NBCI domestic

In these cases the DPP solicitors did deals with these gardai and withdrew charges. Along with RTE Reynolds covering them up
These cases raise grave concerns about how some members of
the force have used their positions to intimidate, manipulate, and silence
victims.
When those entrusted with enforcing the law become
perpetrators of such serious crimes, it calls into question not only the
internal accountability mechanisms of An Garda Síochána but also the safety of
those who rely on them for protection.
When a member or whistleblower exposes a corrupt violent person in the justice department , they get destroyed

Garda management and RTE are happy to destroy whistleblowers, going to all their families, friends, neighbours, colleagues and people they arrested to coerce people into making false statements against them, but when you have a real criminal garda, do they do the same? NO, of course not, they cover up and protect them and give them references for court.
